The tennis team fought for victory against Starkville in the second round playoffs, putting the team at a 17-1 record on the season, looking to sweep through the north half finals and advance to the state tournament.
Head coach Louis Nash said he was impressed with the performance of his team in the opening rounds of the 2012 tennis playoffs.
“We have actually played better than I envisioned,” Nash said.
After beating Starkville 7-0, Nash was a bit leery about the team’s performance, but still satisfied with the results.
“(It was a) much closer match that the final score reveals,” Nash said. “We’re Always happy to win 7-0, but I thought the kids found a way to win on a couple of courts where we did not necessarily play our best.”
The team will face Ridgeland, a team they haven’t faced before this year, in the North Half competition final May 4. Senior Judson Watson is excited about the match and the rest of the tournament in his final season.
“The season so far has been fun,” Watson said. “I am really looking forward to state competition where we start playing some really good teams.
If the team moves on from, they will play in the State Final on May 7.
