Oxford High School was looking to hire a second cheer coach to assist head coach Lauren Lauzon for the 2023-2024 school year. After some searching they found, now assistant coach, Lauren Fite. With many years of experience and much love for the sport she was a perfect fit for the job. Fite’s cheer career started in Marietta, Ga. at a very young age.
“I started cheering when I was four years old. My older sister cheered, so it started as me just following in her footsteps but I ended up loving it and continuing it longer than her,” Fite said.
One of Fite’s favorite things about cheer growing up was being surrounded by a team full of girls that support and push one another to be the best that they can be.
“My favorite part about cheer is being able to express yourself and have fun while being surrounded by others that share the same drive and passion for the sport,” Fite said.
Cheering was a huge part of Coach Fite’s life, from the time she was in elementary school all the way until she graduated college, and even today.
“I have memories from each chapter of cheer in my life. As a kid, I loved being able to cheer for my brother’s football team. As a middle schooler, I loved spending all day Saturday at the football field cheering in the heat for my friends,” Fite said. As a high schooler, Friday nights were always fun, but that continued into Saturday’s when we competed early in the mornings.”
In high school her competitive cheer team won World’s two different times.
“That’s also when I had allstar cheer competitions and my team won Worlds, the biggest cheerleading competition, twice,” Fite said.
Another accomplishment she had was making the Ole Miss cheer team unexpectedly.
“After high school, I decided to try my luck and try out for Ole Miss Cheer. Luckily, I made the team and cheered there all four years on game days, appearances, and competitions,” Fite said. “I came to Ole Miss on a whim from a town in Georgia that knew nothing about Mississippi and I hope by showing my love and gratitude for not only cheerleading, but the city of Oxford, I can allow people to see that anything you work hard to achieve can be done through dedication and willingness to accept failure.”
After Fite graduated from college she decided to stay in Oxford because of the love she had for the city and began teaching 5th grade math at Central Elementary. She began her position as Assistant Coach for the cheer team this year. She loves the rewarding feeling of spreading her love for cheer with the young girls at OHS.
“My favorite part about coaching is being able to form bonds with so many different girls and find those girls that either love cheer and need an extra push, or lost their love for the sport and need to feel loved and supported again by someone that truly cares for them,” Fite said.
Growing up cheering for so many different teams exposed her to many coaches to look up to.
“Cheer has been a massive part of my life and I’ve been blessed to have the best coaches and support system,” Fite said.
Her positive attitude and years of experience is sure to be helpful for the girls on the Oxford High School cheer team.
“I just want to be that person for someone else,” Fite said.
