Recap
On Friday Oct. 20, the Charger football team continued district play with their game at Southaven. The Chargers started the game quickly running up the scoreboard scoring 21 points in the first half. Southaven was able to get on the board scoring a touchdown before the half concluded. The second half was slow for both teams but the Chargers were able to come away with a victory winning 29-7 to gain a spot in the first round of the playoffs.
Last week the Chargers traveled to Lewisburg for a chance to clinch a home playoff game next week. From the start, the Patriots exploded on offense scoring 28 points in the first half. The chargers were then able to come back and score 21 points to conclude the half trailing 28-21. In the 4th quarter the Chargers were finally able to pull away and won the game 35-28.
Game: Oxford vs Hernando
Tomorrow night the Chargers will face off against the Hernando Tigers for this year’s senior night matchup. The Tigers are coming off of a two game losing streak losing to Desoto Central 35-21 and Southaven 21-18 in overtime. Although the Chargers have already clinched the one seed in the district, with a win tomorrow the Chargers will finish the regular season undefeated in district play.
Oxford Players to Watch
Senior RB Jay Brown: Last week, Brown had 2 rushing touchdowns and has over 500 yards total this season. In the Charger’s game against Desoto Central, Brown ran for over 100 yards in the single game. While the carries are mostly split between Brown and sophomore RB Jamarion Pegues, Brown will have many explosive plays that will greatly impact the outcome of the game.
Sophomore DB Collin Flanigan: Despite just being a sophomore, Flanigan has already made a huge impact for the defense in his first season. Flanigan has three interceptions so far this season and over 50 total tackles causing him to be a threat to the Tiger’s offense.
Prediction
Since the Tigers are playing for a guaranteed spot in the playoffs next week, I think they will be playing with a lot of motivation. However, I still believe that the Chargers can pull ahead and finish the regular season undefeated in district play. Chargers win 38-24.
