Homecoming month at Oxford High School has arrived which means the excitement of asking one another to the dance. Most people take the easiest approach and send a text message to ask someone, whereas extravagant and outgoing homecoming proposals are dying off.
Homecoming week is filled with themed dress up days, a parade, a football game, a dance, and fun events. Typically when homecoming week is associated with big proposals including posters, candy, and flowers. Regrettably, this is
not reality anymore.
Proposals are a great way to kick start school spirit. This excites students for the upcoming week which would in return incline the rate of students participating in the week’s activities. Homecoming week is always a very memorable time, but a traditional proposal could make it even more special.
Many people prefer to take the easier approach to homecoming proposals and send a simple text. While it might take more effort, extravagant proposals are much more memorable and give students something to look back on years from now.
A more common approach is where students make signs for a proposal which leaves room for creativity with what to put on it. Finding the perfect proposal idea and time to surprise someone shows them that you truly care. There are endless ways to propose–from in public at a football game to in private at someone’s
house.
Regardless of location, the proposee typically gathers a friend or two to be a part of the proposal in order to film it or simply to enjoy the moment as well. This leaves both the proposee and the proposed a wonderful memory to look back on years from now. For some, high school memories are something that they cherish far past their time in high school.
Proposals are more than just a sign, they put a smile on someone’s face, give them a memory to look back on, and make them feel appreciated. Whether big or small, gestures are always a guaranteed way to make someone feel value. Especially during the busy fall semester people often become stressed, and a fun proposal is a way to let a person know that they are not going unnoticed.
As the years go by, fewer people make traditional, outgoing proposals for homecoming. The heavy use of technology is
one contributing factor to proposals dwindling down. Many students are drawn to using their phones to ask someone to homecoming by text or over Snapchat. This results in the person asking not putting in any effort. Send-
ing a text was not something that people had the option to do before technology, and asking over the phone can make the person being proposed to feel underwhelmed and unappreciated.
Although the use of technology can be used in declining proposals, it can also be used in growing them significantly. There are many apps such as Pinterest, TikTok, and Instagram that can be used for inspiration and creativity when making a proposal sign. Proposals can range from very simple to super extravagant.
Posting videos and photos from a couples proposal on social media can inspire others to participate in fun proposals, and bring back the trend. Unfortunately most times when seeing a proposal on social media it dates back to multiple years ago. Despite the fact that the use of proposals is declining, this year at OHS some students have enacted the use of proposals which has been highly admired by many. Some students have even taken it upon themselves to do a proposal after seeing a friend do one. With hopes to see this trend continue, Oxford High School has seen significant growth in homecoming proposals this year.
