Senior Cianna Davis was recently named one of the two girls powerlifting captains for the 2025 season. Davis is also a member of the OHS Chargerettes, track team, and previously color guard.
“I did color guard for four years, both years in middle school and up to tenth grade,” Davis said. “It really made me want to do multiple sports because it made me see how fun everything at Oxford is.”
While Davis is no longer a member of the color guard team, she expressed that it helped her in many ways. The team still holds a special place in her heart.
“One of my instructors would always tell us to make memories and be memorable,” Davis said. “This was something that stuck with me, he was the best.”
Being a Chargerette for four years is something that Davis has made many memories from as well. Her teammates have been inspired by her positivity throughout the years.
“Cianna is one of those people that just has a contagious smile,” Chargerette teammate and junior, Lainey Schuesselin said. “No matter what we are doing at practice she always has a smile on her face and is so encouraging to everyone else. She is the perfect teammate you could ask for.”
Davis has impacted many people she has danced with throughout the years and credits the team for being a very important part of her life.
“I have been dancing my whole life,” Davis said. “Being a Chargerette made me see how important dance is in my life.”
Additionally, Davis has been on the track team for all four years in high school. Her passion for track has grown over the years.
“It is very individualized but at the same time the team is always there for you and cheering you on,” Davis said. “I love running and jumping so I have seen my love grow for track since middle school. Right now I am seeking to run track in college so it is something that I really want to take to the next level.”
Along with track, powerlifting has taught Davis a lot. Last year was her first year on the powerlifting team and she looks forward to the upcoming season.
“It [Powerlifting] has taught me many lessons,” Davis said. “One of the most important things I have learned is to not give up because no matter how much you fail you can al- ways get back up.”
Davis is determined to not only be the best that she can be but make everyone around her their best too. She has worked on building her strength both in and out of the powerlifting season.
“Last year she got put out in the regionals,” powerlifting head coach Issac Boose said. “I have seen her determination go to a whole level this entire off season.”
As Davis approached her senior powerlifting season, she was named captain along with junior Kayden Boose. This role is something that Davis is eager to excel in.
“It is a really big responsibility but I know I can handle it,” Davis said. “I just want to make everything really good and hold it to a high standard for myself, the team, and the coaches.”
One of Davis’ main goals for this season is to bring home a state title as the girls team did in the previous season.
“My goal is to let everyone make it as far as they can and let everyone see that they’re good at it,” Davis said. “We want to be back to back state champions so the goal is to win.” With many goals in mind Davis is excited to start the season off strong. It is evident to those around Davis that she is going to be an amazing captain to the team.
“Something she loves to talk about is how powerlifting doesn’t really feel like a team but more like a family and how something that they really embody is that they are a family,” Schuesselin said. “I think she will further develop that connection with all of the teammates and create a second home for everyone that is a part of the team.”
Having a team that is so close helps the team in all aspects. Being on a team that is like a family to you is something that Davis loves most about her powerlifting team.
“One of the things that she does best is making relationships with people,” Boose said. “All of the girls on the team feel like they can come talk to her and she is able to relate to everybody.”
Being a part of multiple sports teams can get stressful and overwhelming at times. Someone who has always been there for Davis throughout her time in all sports is her mom.
“My mom has kept me motivated because she keeps me on top of everything,” Davis said. “She helps me to breathe too because there is a lot that goes into doing three sports and staying on top of my schoolwork at the same time.”
Being a multi-sport athlete has benefitted Davis over the years in many ways and she is grateful for the opportunities to be on these different teams.
“This has affected me in only good ways,” Davis said. “I get to network with a whole lot of people and I get to see the different sides of each sport.”
