With the first couple months of 2025 coming to a close, new fashion trends have already emerged since the New Year. Some of the designs flying off of shelves are rather deserving of their status, while others will be looked back on with regret in a few year’s time.
There were a few designs that notably had aquatic influences on the spring/summer 2025 runway, specifically in the Ralph Lauren and The Attico collections. While aquatic is nothing new for a summer collection, this trend was already done in the past and is already beginning to feel tacky. There will always be variations of sea-shell necklaces and flowy outfits in every spring/ summer season, but leaning too far into the blues, sequins, ruffles, pearls, and shells only gives an almost costume-like look.
With spring around the corner, there has been one color making an especially large comeback: yellow. Yellow was seen all across the spring/summer 2025 collections this year, with an emphasis on vanilla yellow, known for a luxurious and sophisticated look, and canary yellow, which makes a bold impact. Yellow, when done correctly, can look both gorgeous and bold in the right outfit, and is anticipated to be seen much through- out the warm months.
A trend that was beginning to emerge in the tail end of 2024 was animal print. Specifically, there was a dramatic increase in cheetah print, but snake print and zebra print also became increasingly popular. At this moment, the animal print outfits feel very stylish, feminine, and reminiscent of the y2k era. It would be ideal to say that animal print will stay as chic and cool as it is now, but in three year’s time society will likely look back on it as tacky and ridiculous in the same manner that we did not only a few years ago when looking back on 2000’s fashion.
Asymmetry has had a slow rise in popularity within the fashion industry, but it finally made a full comeback as of this season. While there are some asymmetric designs society should not get behind, such as one-pants, there are some beautiful flowy skirts and one-shoulder tops that make clothing items feel unique, interesting, fresh, and elevated.
Some looks on the spring/ summer 2025 runway were the epitome of elegance, fun, and uniqueness. However, it is important when new trends come around to distinguish between what will make you stand out and remain timeless, compared to what will look tacky in only a year.
