This summer, the OHS girls basketball team welcomed junior Sydney Glahn who moved from Atlanta, Ga. where she attended Mount Pisgah High School. The team has impacted her just as much as she has impacted it with her success, leadership, and positivity.
“Being on this team has shown me what it is like to be a team that actually cares about each other,” Sydney Glahn said. “That is something everyone needs to experience in my opinion.”
The OHS girls basketball team has had a successful season. They are eager to always advance themselves.
“I have met some of my best friends, the season is going amazing, I am gaining my confidence, I love the coaching staff, and how everyone is willing to put in the extra hours,” Sydney Glahn said. “Playing for Oxford has changed my perspective on basketball.”
Sydney Glahn’s dedication and desire to better herself does not go unnoticed. She works hard at practice and puts in many hours outside of practice.
“She is a hard worker,” OHS girls basketball head coach Cliff Ormon said. “She comes in on her own and spends a lot of time in the gym working on her game.”
Sydney Glahn’s family helped her to find trainers when they moved. They play a key role in her success and are there for her no matter what.
“My family are my biggest supporters,” Sydney Glahn said. “They come to every game, are the loudest, and are always there for me during good or bad games. Playing at Oxford, specifically, I was really nervous because I was the new girl that was supposed to be good. They never failed to support me, be proud of me, and tell me that they are proud of me.”
Ormon expressed how Sydney Glahn is a leader by the way she always works extremely hard on the court. She is a compassionate person which is evident when she is playing.
“She is not a selfish basketball player,” Emily Glahn, Sydney Glahn’s mom, said. “I always see her trying to encourage and build other people up.”
During this season Sydney Glahn had an unexpected turn of events. She tore her UCL in December, which only made her work harder to get back on the court.
“When she gets hurt or something happens she works harder,” Emily Glahn said. “I think that keeps her going. If she is down she just keeps working hard to just get better and get back to the game that she loves.”
The energy at OHS athletic events is unmatched and has been something that Sydney Glahn has enjoyed.
“My favorite part of playing at Oxford has definitely been the environment in regards to games, especially home games,” Sydney Glahn said. “The crowds, environment, and energy come across that everyone enjoys the game.”
In this new atmosphere Sydney Glahn has received multiple awards. Some include Mississippi Atheltico player of the week and making the All District team.
“You are always excited to see your players earn an individual honor,” Ormon said. “I am very proud of her, it shows the work she has done prior to winning the award.”
Along with these awards, Sydney Glahn has been invited to play at the Mississippi All Star game which will take place on March 25. She is committed to ending the season strong and will soon start preparing for the game.
“Right now I am just focusing on finishing the season,” Sydney Glahn said. “As I go into the All Star game my preparation will probably be a lot of shooting and refining moves.”
Sydney Glahn takes every opportunity she is given as a chance to perform highly for whomever might be watching her. She is motivated by many things but one of the biggest motivators being her desire to play basketball in college.
“I think what keeps me most motivated is the possibility that I could play at the next level and that these opportunities are given to people that work hard,” Sydney Glahn said. “I really want to play basketball in college so every game that I am able to perform in front of any eyes could change my life.”
