hool have been selected for Early Entry Programs at Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi. Tyler Quinton has been accepted into the Veterinary Medicine school at Mississippi State, while Everett Cassidy and Landon Schock are going to Ole Miss to study in the field of Pharmaceuticals.
Early Entry Programs allows high-achieving high school seniors to earn pre-approved acceptance into their chosen field. This avoids the competitive selection process for regular entry admission that normally occurs. Students get the benefit of specialized tutoring, professional advancement opportunities and the chance to be part of the living-learning community. Both Mississippi State’s and Ole Miss’ applications are fairly similar.
“The early admission process was fairly straightforward,” Schock said. “We had to write an essay to apply and then go in an interview to be fully accepted. When I got accepted, I was very excited. It is a great school, and pharmacy is something I am passionate about.”
Being accepted into the program is seen as a great honor and is a testament to how hard a student has worked. It affects the people in the community as well, and others start to recognize the hard work that these students have been putting in for a long time.
“I am super proud of them,” Quinton’s and Cassidy’s teacher, Lauren Lauzon, said. “Everett and Tyler have been in AVID since seventh grade. For years we have worked on how to meet challenges head on, never give up even when it’s hard and to communicate your necessary needs to another person. I truly believe Everett and Tyler will be successful at their respected college choices. I told them all of their hard work would pay off, and it did. They get to celebrate now and bask in the success with their friends and family. I am so glad I get to be a small part of that.”
With Early Entry Programs being such game changers for upcoming college students, many people want to apply for it. This makes it very competitive. Iff you are accepted, it is it a great accomplishment.
“Because of how easy I felt that it was to go through the application and acceptance process, I was not super proud of myself,” Cassidy said. “But when I realized that it was more competitive than I thought and they capped the program at 100, I kind of started to realize how big of a deal it actually is. The feedback from my friends and family also fed into my excitement and pride because I could tell how happy and proud they were for me.”
Being in this program is a big relief off of a student’s chest. It relieve the students of stress they would experience in the future when going through more competitive application processes. The Early Entry Programs will also allow these students to skip about two years of school they would have to go through if not in the program.
“I don’t have to worry about the admissions process post-undergrad,” Quinton said. “Once I finish all of my pre-requisites, I am immediately matriculated into the program and start classes towards my doctorate. I’m really excited for all of the experiences vet school will offer.”
