On any given game day — regardless of the sport, time or location — Dr. Sarah Lacy can be found at the scorer’s table, in the press box or traveling with the team, working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. After 40 years in the classroom and even more time supporting athletics, Lacy has become the heart of the athletic program, even if many do not realize it.
“She is extremely trustworthy, extremely dependable and I know any time we have an event that I need help covering that she will always be willing to help out,” Oxford School District co-activities director Chris Baughman said.
From organizing events to keeping statistics and managing behind the scenes responsibilities, Lacy’s role has been essential to events maintaining to run smoothly.
“She has been here for so long, she truly embodies ‘charger for life,’” Baughman said.
It is not just her consistency, it is Lacy’s personality that has left a lasting impression on those around her.
“She’s honest, she’s super straightforward and when she cracks a joke, it completely throws you off guard,” OHS teacher Lauren Lauzon said.
Her care for others extends far beyond her duties in athletics.
“She’s like your mom,” Lauzon said. “She asks how your day’s been, she brings snacks, she just looks out for us.”
For Lacy, her upbringing revolved around her love for sports, shaping her involvement in both athletics and education.
“I’ve always loved sports because I’ve been an only child,” Lacy said. “I would sit and watch football and baseball with my dad. I kept books in high school until my senior year, and it just kind of fell in.”
Even after decades of work, Lacy’s motivation remains in how you treat others.
“The way you approach people is going to determine the way that they approach you,” Lacy said. “If you approach with a smile and a hello, it goes so far.”
