Does Taylor Swift’s tenth studio album ‘Midnights’ meet fan expectations

“Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at midnight.” American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift released her tenth studio album “Midnights,” on October 21, 2022. Midnights is Swift’s first album of “freshly written material” since her album Evermore dropped in 2020. She announced the coming out of this album at the MTV Video Music Awards after accepting the award for video of the year for her single “All Too Well”.  Fans were in shock when Swift announced the new album since previously this year, she had dropped many easter eggs hinting at a rewrite of her albums 1989 or Speak Now.

The story behind this album is summed up in a quote by Swift that states, “this is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.” Midnights will have 13 tracks with sides A (6) and B (7), making it shorter in comparison to her previous albums. Fans are beginning to speculate that the songs will portray the same theme as her past songs such as “Forever Winter,” or “Mirrorball.” Some fans took to Twitter saying they speculate the first side of the track will be ‘sweet dreams,’ while the other, ‘terrors.’

With the release of the album, fans went wild reposting the album on social media and raving at the new songs. But did the album meet the swifties’ expectations?

As previously stated, fans speculated the album to be full of ‘sweet dreams’ and ‘terrors’ covering Swift’s point of view on love and heartbreak. Digging into the lyrics and song titles, we get to take a closer look at the theme of this album altogether. Midnights has nineteen songs plus a part apology, part disclaimer called “Dear Reader” attached to the album in which Swift reminds her fans that she is in the end, a human and adds a sweet but sad ending to this retrospective album. Right away, the songs ‘Lavender Haze’, ‘Maroon’, ‘Anti-Hero,’ and ‘Snow on the Beach’ excelled above the rest on Swift’s album and seem to be the ones fans listen to the most. The Atlantics described this album to be “sleek and sturdy in a way that none of her previous albums have been.”  Reading through the newly released songs, we see lyrics that express emotions in a more poetic and deep tone. Swifties loved Midnight’s songs’ lyrics and took to Tik Tok and other apps to repost the lyrics of the greatly loved artist. Midnights is the top-selling album of 2022 year-to-date and has set a modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales. Swift’s album has taken fame just like the rest and is immensely loved by fans. Midnights is a success as Taylor Swift’s tenth studio album and seems to meet the expectations of fans all around.
